Why is my hair frizzing when it's not even summertime?
We hear it all the time behind the chair. “It’s February! It’s supposed to be the ‘dry season’ in Florida! Why do I look like a poodle by noon?”
Friends, we live in a tropical climate. “Winter” in Tampa is really just “Gentle Baby Summer” with better breezy evenings. But there is a specific reason why your hair freaks out during this transition season, and it has nothing to do with bad luck.

The Humidity vs. Dry Air Battle
Here is the science: Hair is hygroscopic. What does that mean though? That means it absorbs and exchanges water with the air around it. In February, we often have days where the air is dry in the morning (hello, 50 degrees) and humid by the afternoon (hello, 80 degrees and sticky).
When your hair is dry or damaged, the cuticle (the outside layer) lifts up. When the humidity spikes in the afternoon, moisture from the air rushes into your hair shaft to fill the gaps. The result? The hair shaft swells, twists, and kinks. Voila: Frizz.
This is especially common for all of our wavy and curly clients who might be trying to rock a sleek blowout, but it does still apply for almost every head of hair. The moment you step out of the salon and walk to your car, the air is already trying to undo all of our hard work.

Hydration is Your Shield
The only way to stop moisture from rushing in is to make sure your hair is already full of the right kind of moisture. Think of your hair like a sponge. If a sponge is already wet, it can’t pick up a spill. If your hair is hydrated with quality lipids and conditioners, it won’t try to drink the humidity from the air.
Product Spotlight: Love Smoothing Conditioner & OI All In One Milk

If you are constantly fighting the frizz, you need to switch your conditioner. We recommend the Love Smoothing Conditioner from Davines. It’s designed for frizzy or unruly hair and uses Minuta Olive extract to elasticize and soften the hair. It packs the hair with fatty acids so the humidity can’t get in.
For a leave‑in (which is non‑negotiable in Florida), grab the OI All In One Milk. It’s lightweight, so it won’t weigh down fine hair, but it provides incredible heat protection and frizz control. Spray it on damp hair before you blow‑dry. It’s essentially a raincoat for your hair strands.

Local Event Ready:
Heading to the Strawberry Festival later this month? If you’re walking around, enjoying the sights and tastes while it's hot and humid outside, make sure to protect your hair! It's guaranteed to be crowded and crowds bring out sweat in all of us; sweat is salt water, and salt is drying. Coat your hair in OI All In One Milk and braid it before grabbing those strawberries. It keeps the sweat from soaking into the mid‑shaft of your hair and prevents post‑adventure breakage.
Stay smooth out there, Tampa!
